WHO WE ARE

Howard I. Shapiro & Associates offers consulting and engineering design services to the construction industry, construction equipment manufacturers, and crane owners and users. We focus primarily on furnishing engineering support and problem solving for construction contractors, construction managers, and developers. Our mission is to assist clients in constructing safely, efficiently, and quickly, thereby enhancing their reputations and profitability.

Accustomed to working within the short lead times prevalent in the industry, we are nonetheless committed to using our experience and ingenuity to deliver quality services and practical, buildable solutions. We meld the benefits of advanced mathematical and analytical techniques with extensive “hands-on" field experience to create technically correct, pragmatic designs.

LAWRENCE K. SHAPIRO, P.E.

Lawrence K. Shapiro, P.E. is the Co-Principal of Howard I. Shapiro & Associates and with over four decades of experience as a Professional Engineer, he has become a widely respected influence in the field of consulting and construction engineering design services in the New York City area and internationally.

Lawrence earned a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering at the University of Virginia in 1978 and has been a Licensed Professional Engineer since February 1983 in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. He is a member of ASCE, ASME, NSPE, AWS, a Chairman of ASME B30.3, an ASME B30 Main Committee Delegate, a ASME P30 Member, as well as an ISO TC96 US Delegate. He has Co-Authored multiple editions of the book Cranes and Derricks, McGraw-Hill Publishing Co., with his father Howard I. Shapiro and brother and Co-Principal Jay P. Shapiro, as well as being the Co-Author of various articles in trade publications.

He is especially proud to be a third generation professional engineer, and carrying on a tradition that continues to the next generation.

Graduated from INSA Lyon, Villeurbanne, France in 1998 with a Master Degree of Engineering and Master of Advanced Studies in Solide Mechanics, and in 1999 with a Master of Business Administration.

Member of ASCE and AISC.

Works with: Structural Design and engineering of steel and concrete structures. Structural integrity analysis of temporary or permanent structures. Analysis and design review of structure during construction. Design and engineering of tower crane, hoist and scaffolding installations. Logistics, constructibility and means and methods studies. Graduated from Transylvania University, Brasov, Romania: BSME with an MS in Manufacturing Technology. Professional credentials include NYS Civil Construction P.E., Microsoft ATEC: MCP SQL Server Administration, MCSE, and NYU SPS – Electrical Systems Design.  Works as an IT Manager and Project Engineer. Prior to becoming a member of HISA Team, worked in the construction industry and IT industry as a Systems Engineer and in Database Administration.

Works with various engineers to discuss the impacts the work may have on NYC streets and sidewalks, coordinates with them to develop a plan that not only helps the client, but also improves our chances of an approval with the NYCDOT, and designs site logistics for all phases of various new building projects; demolition, excavation/foundation, and superstructure. Secures and maintains all DOT permits.
