Howard I. Shapiro & Associates Consulting Engineers, P.C. is a third generation family-owned enterprise that has its roots in the sole proprietorship of Charles M. Shapiro debuting in 1946. In 1968, following the passage of a crane law by the City Council in New York, Howard I. Shapiro started honing the skills that led to the firm’s present specialization.
The firm was reorganized as a partnership of father and sons under its present name on Jan. 1, 1989.
Until his passing in 2007, Howard Shapiro was nationally recognized as a crane expert. In the late 1970’s, he authored the 1st Edition of Cranes and Derricks, published by McGraw Hill. For 35 years he was an active member of ANSI, SAE and ISO committees and was instrumental in drafting crane standards.
